roobs vs mental health tourism

November 13, 2017 Roobs Leiser

another mental health awareness hashtag has come & gone, and once more i - like many others - are left, cold & lonely, in the shadow behind its fleeting spotlight. and, with each passing ‘day of awareness’, the more i’m able to understand and articulate where it fails.  i realise, this year, that the failure of some people advocating for mental health is that they approach disorders symptomatically. for example - someone who does not suffer from generalised anxiety might approach the issue of anxiety as a battle against feeling nervous before an event, or before meeting someone new, or...

roobs vs her brain (for a change)

the kaiser chiefs have a song called ‘love’s not a competition (but i’m winning)’. i’m thinking of doing a cover version called ‘mental health’s not a competition (but even if it was i’d still be losing). as far as i’m aware, a lot of people notice an uncontrollable competitive aspect to their mental illness - but instead of it being a case of ‘i’ve got it worse than you’, my daily experience is one of ‘why not me?’. i see people online (i know, i know, a piece in which a millennial talks about comparing herself to people on the...

10 things they don't tell you about anxiety pt.2

May 13, 2017 Roobs Leiser

and we're back! thanks for tuning into another episode of MY BRAIN IS NOT MY FRIEND SOMETIMES. the following list is the second instalment of '10 things they don't tell you about anxiety' - a breakdown of some of the more surprising physical symptoms that you don't always realise are a product of your worrying. enjoy (the best you can while you subconsciously berate yourself for taking 10 mins to read this instead of doing the more important things you should be doing this morning). the tension. a while back i decided to treat myself to a groupon deal massage....

anxiety sucks. feeling anxious and nervous and scared sucks. but, for me at least, one of the most frustrating aspects of it is the complete curveball that is how many symptoms of anxiety feel absolutely nothing like anxiety. when you rock up to the GP with a list the length of your arm of all your physical ailments, only to be told that every last one of them is because you’re anxious, you get a bit of a wake up call. on the one hand, it’s super disheartening to realise just how much of an impact your mental health is...

how's your head?

i don’t like the 1 in 4 statistic. if we try to gauge the prevalence, and importance, of mental health issues using a stat like ‘1 in 4’ we’ll never get anywhere. 1 in 4 of us (data that’s probably out of date by now anyway) will be diagnosed with a mental or neurological disorder at some point during our lives. that’s what the 1 in 4 stat is. what that absolutely doesn’t mean, is that only 1 in 4 of us will struggle with our mental health at some point. mental health and a clinical diagnosis of a mental...
